As an almost owner of a first gen RX sexy I’ve been thinking of a way Mazda could make this happen. It’s not like they’ve abandoned the Rotary altogether ether, they’ve had an odd rotary prototype of sorts in testing for awhile, but no vessel to viably bring it to market. Enter Toyota. More specifically the Toyobaru siblings. A next gen is on the way and Mazda could inquire and lend some technical development. My idea, a joint sports car between Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru. Each using their own power trains relevant to their brands. The FRS using a TRD massaged four banger, BRZ using the proven boxer, and Mazda introducing a RX-3 using a small turbo rotary or rotary hybrid.

These three could set the bar in different price ranges to distinguish each other from one another. Toyota could still offer the Boxer as an option, but in terms of output it would go in order. FRS, BRZ, RX-3. It could work seeing the next gen of these cars might in fact be bigger Miatas.

The RX-7 as much as us Rotary enthusiast love it can survive in spirit if anything else. I'm still not opposed to a sky active coupe.

I like it, but I want real RX-7 rebirth. Especially now that we can just toss on an electric motor and boom, low range torque in town.

It's so hard though.

A 45K Corvette and Porsche fighter.

The idea behind the Toyobaru collaboration was to make a fun sports car and save money doing so. If each manufacturer made their own engine, then they'd be spending a lot more money on the car, rendering the collaboration pointless.

Well what if they shared a fundamental base engine for each car, then offered their own hotted up version for their specific customer bases using engines that represent them ?

Sort of. More like Miata fun, Toyobaru precision, Z speeds, in a Corvette/Porsche stance and design level at 45K. All the best cars need more power, all the ones with power have lost their feel. So plant it right in that sweet spot.

Rotary powered Toyobaru?

Damn why haven't I thought of that?

well, RX3 has a nice ring to it.

And I’m talking engine swapping a RENISIS into a FRS.

That’s the better idea, but first we have to establish the way each make can represent them. For a baseline, let’s assume all 4-banger models are turbocharged and have 300 hp.

Mazda is easy for me—they can take the hybrid and the “punch-above-weight” mantle with a 2-rotor powered (charges batteries) range-topper (think: Mazda Cosmo RX-3—that’s two classic names revived at once!). Peg it in both the i8 and the Mustang’s tier in terms of performance, but hover around 35k. The regular Mazda Cosmo will be pegged as some sort of premium ZJ7 with Alcantara and options and all that, plus Skyactiv.

Toyota and Subaru are a bit harder, as I was thinking of putting the ZC7 BR-Z in the rallying position (R-GT class) and the ZN7 FR-S in the touring position (replace the BR-Z GT300), but right now the roles are reversed. I think (this is tentative) the BR-Z can be pegged as the “go-anywhere, any weather” sports car with the Symmetric All-Wheel Drive and Proud of Boxer stuff and maybe even “Soul of WRX”, while the FR-S... well, chuck it as a Scion and call it the Toyota Sprinter GT86 instead. It sounds better that way.
